Introduction
Lucid: AI Dream Journal ("Lucid", "we", "our", or "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, retain, and protect information when you use our mobile application and related services.
Information We Collect
Account and Profile Information
- Account information: Email address, user ID, authentication provider, and related account metadata when you create or sign in to an account.
- Profile and preferences: App preferences, language, theme, notification preferences, consent choices, subscription status, and similar settings.
- Optional personalization context: Information you choose to provide, such as life context, communication preferences, sleep context, mood or stress reflections, and other details used to personalize dream interpretation.
Dream, Journal, and AI Content
- Dream entries: Text you enter, titles, emotions, lucidity level, sleep quality, symbols, tags, dates, and other dream metadata.
- Voice entries: Audio recordings and/or transcripts when you use voice input for dream capture. Voice input may be processed by the speech recognition provider for your device platform, such as Apple Speech Recognition on iOS or Google speech recognition services on Android.
- AI outputs: Dream interpretations, summaries, detected symbols, generated prompts, and related AI-generated content.
- Chat conversations: Messages you send to Luci, our AI assistant, and assistant responses.
- Data exports: Export files generated at your request, including the data needed to prepare and deliver the export.
Subscription, Purchase, and Transaction Information
- Subscription status and purchase history: Information about your plan, entitlement status, product identifiers, purchase dates, renewal status, and related subscription records. Payments are processed by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat; we do not receive your full payment card information.
Notifications and Device Information
- Push notification data: Expo push token, notification preference, platform, app version/build, and a generated per-install device identifier used to deliver and manage notifications. Notification payloads may include a dream ID and a generated interpretation title or fallback notification message.
- Device and technical data: Device type, operating system, app version, crash data, performance data, diagnostic logs, and similar technical information.
Usage and Diagnostics Data
- App launches, taps, feature usage, rating screen interactions, and similar app activity.
- Diagnostics and performance information used to improve reliability. Diagnostics are controlled by your analytics consent choices in the app.
How We Use Your Information
- To provide, maintain, and personalize Lucid's dream journal, interpretation, chat, statistics, and notification features
- To process and manage subscriptions, purchases, entitlements, and restore purchases
- To send you important updates about your account
- To generate AI interpretations, chat responses, detected symbols, and related features
- To generate audio narration for interpretations when you use text-to-speech features
- To provide data export and account deletion features
- To analyze app usage, improve features, and improve reliability, where permitted by your consent choices
- To prevent abuse, debug errors, enforce limits, and keep the service secure
- To comply with legal obligations
AI Processing
Lucid uses Anthropic Claude, a third-party AI service provided by Anthropic PBC, to provide dream interpretation and chat features. When you request these features, we send the content needed to fulfill the request to Anthropic, such as dream text, dream details including date, emotions, sleep and mood notes, chat messages, and optional profile or onboarding context you have provided. Anthropic processes this content to generate AI responses for Lucid. AI-generated responses are for personal reflection and exploration only and are not medical, mental health, legal, or professional advice.
Lucid also uses Inworld AI text-to-speech to provide audio narration for generated interpretations. If Inworld is unavailable, Lucid may use Google Cloud Text-to-Speech as a fallback. When you use audio narration, we send generated interpretation text and narration settings, such as selected voice and language, to these providers to create audio.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored securely using Supabase (PostgreSQL database) with industry-standard encryption. We use secure authentication and follow best practices to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps designed to protect your information.
Data Retention
- Dream entries and interpretations: Retained until you delete them or delete your account
- Audio narration cache files: Generally retained for up to 90 days unless you delete your account or the cache is cleared sooner
- Chat conversations: Retained for 180 days, then automatically deleted
- Technical logs: Generally retained for up to 90 days unless needed longer for security, debugging, or legal reasons
- Data export files: Generally retained for up to 14 days after generation
- Account information: Retained until you delete your account, subject to the account deletion process below
- Subscription and financial records: Retained as required for payment processing, accounting, fraud prevention, tax, and legal compliance, which may be longer than your account lifetime
Account Deletion
You can request account deletion from within the app or by contacting us. In the app, deletion requires two confirmations and is processed permanently after the final confirmation. We delete or de-identify personal data associated with your account, except information we must retain for legal, security, payment, fraud prevention, or compliance purposes. Deleting your account does not cancel App Store or Google Play subscriptions; billing may continue unless you cancel the subscription in your store account settings.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Delete your account and associated app data, subject to records we must retain for legal, security, payment, fraud prevention, tax, or compliance purposes
- Export your data
- Choose whether to share optional analytics and diagnostics in app settings
- Manage push notification permissions through your device settings and in-app settings
- Cancel your subscription at any time

We use the following third-party services:

- RevenueCat: Subscription management and payment processing
- Google Play Store / Apple App Store: Payment processing for subscriptions
- Apple Sign-In and Google Sign-In: Account authentication

- Sentry: Crash reporting, diagnostics, and performance monitoring

- Apple Speech Recognition and Google speech recognition services: Voice transcription when you use voice input

Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We only share data:
- With third-party service providers necessary to provide our services
- With Anthropic when needed to generate interpretations or chat responses
- With Inworld AI and Google Cloud Text-to-Speech when needed to generate audio narration
- With Apple Speech Recognition or Google speech recognition services when you choose voice input
- With Expo, Apple Push Notification service, and Google/Firebase Cloud Messaging when needed to deliver notifications
- With payment and subscription providers to manage purchases and entitlements
- With analytics, diagnostics, and notification providers as described in this policy
- When required by law or legal process
- To protect our rights or the safety of our users
We require service providers that process personal data for Lucid, including Anthropic, Inworld AI, and Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, to protect that data using confidentiality, security, and data protection obligations that provide the same or equal protection as described in this policy.
Analytics and Diagnostics Choices
You can manage analytics and diagnostics preferences in the app's Data & Privacy settings. Lucid does not track you across other companies' apps or websites for advertising or attribution. You can change notification permissions in your device settings.
Children's Privacy
Our app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.
International Data Transfers
Your data may be processed and stored in countries other than your own. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date and, if significant, through in-app notification. Your continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
